PhD Programme

The PhD program at IILM University offers a rigorous program with world-class national and international pedagogy, faculty and research guides. With well-established infrastructural facilities and knowledge base, IILM University offers Ph.D. programme in a wide range of areas in management, psychology and law. The objectives of the Ph.D. programme are to contribute to frontier areas of knowledge and provide superior research training. The academic programme leading to the Ph.D. degree is broad-based and involves a course credit requirement and a research project leading to thesis submission. The University with its vibrant community of faculty, students, researchers and industry experts, provides an intellectually stimulating and nurturing environment to its students and strongly encourages research in transdisciplinary areas.

A. IILM is now accepting applications for PhD program in four different categories:

  • Category 1: Full-time Self-financed/ External Funded students
  • Category 2: Full-time students with Scholarship
  • Category 3: Part-time students with Tuition Fee Waiver
  • Category 4: Part-time Self-financed/ External Funded students

Note:- Preference will be given to candidates who are recipients of the Junior Research Fellowship from the UGC. Students are also encouraged to get funding for their research from industry and other agencies with the approval of the University.

B. Eligibility Criteria for Admission

Candidates for admission to the PhD programme shall have a Master’s degree or a professional degree declared equivalent to the Master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade ‘B’ in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) or an equivalent degree from a foreign educational Institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions.

A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time, or for those who had obtained their Master’s degree prior to 19th September, 1991. The eligibility marks of 55% (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) and the relaxation of 5% to the categories mentioned above are permissible based only on the qualifying marks without including the grace mark procedures.

C. Course Work Requirements

For all PhD students at IILM University, total course work is for 290 hours which is expected to be completed within 18 months- 2 years of enrolment in the programme as per the University guidelines. Out of which 210 hours are supposed to be finished in the first year and the remaining 80 hours in the next 6 months- 1 year.

IILM welcomes candidates who bring in prior knowledge in their area of doctoral work and will be given due recognition in the form of credit waivers. Admitted PhD students may apply for credit waiver for courses already completed at the postgraduate level during their Masters or MPhil program subject to the approval of the Research Advisory Committee (RAC). The maximum credit waiver permissible is for 110 hours. Candidates will have to complete a minimum of 180 hours at IILMU.

Students admitted are required to complete their course work in maximum 2 years. If they are unable to complete during this 2 year period, their case will go to the Research Advisory Committee for review. The decision of the Committee will be final in this matter.

D. Proposed courses for coursework

Year 1 Courses (Total hours= 210 hours)

  • Statistics for Research using R (40 hours)
  • Research Methodology I (40 hours)
  • Research Writing & Ethics (40 hours)
  • Seminar Course (Outside the area -Interdisciplinary 30 hours)
  • Socio-political Context for Research (30 hours)
  • Area Specific Coursework (30 hours)


Year 2 Courses (Total hours= 80 hours)

  • Qualitative Research (40 hours)
  • Research Methodology II (40 hours)


Total hours for coursework= 290 hours

E. PhD Duration

The total duration of the PhD program is minimum 3 years and maximum 6 years, including the period of coursework. Submission of the doctoral dissertation should be completed by the end of the 5-year period (which includes the coursework period). An extension of a maximum of one year will be provided with the approval of the research committee. If the scholar fails to submit his/her thesis during this extension period, s/he will need to re-register as a fresh candidate. No scholarship or tuition fee waiver will be given for those candidates who have re-registered.

F. Registration in the PhD Program

The students will be registered formally in the PhD program after they have successfully completed their coursework and their PhD research proposal has been accepted by the research committee.

Students will get a maximum of two attempts to present their research proposal. If their research proposal is not accepted in the first round, they can present when the next Research Advisory Committee meeting is scheduled.

G. Research Publications

The candidate is required to submit a minimum of two research papers in the area of their doctoral research before synopsis presentation. These research paper submissions should be to the journals which are indexed by the following organizations:

  • Science Citation Index (SCI), Thomson Reuters
  • Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE), Thomson Reuters
  • Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI), Thomson Reuters
  • Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI), Thomson Reuters
  • Arts & Humanities Citation Index (AHCI), Thomson Reuters
  • Scopus, Elsevier
  • COMPENDEX (Engineering Village), Elsevier

H. Schedule of classes:

The PhD program will begin on Thursday, 10th September, 2021.

Two classes will be held on alternate weeks on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays for 90 minutes each. Timings will be 3:30-5 pm and 5:30-7 pm every alternate week. Candidates are expected to finish assignments and other course-related deliverables in the week when no classes are scheduled.

The University will be conducting classes in Hybrid mode (online as well as face-to-face). Faculty from India and Overseas will be drawn to deliver the lectures in which IILM faculty will co-teach.

I. Fee Structure, University Activities and Work Requirement

  • All candidates admitted to the full-time PhD programmes would be made mandatory to maintain attendance at the campus.• Fees for the PhD program is INR 1 Lakh per year until the candidate graduates.
  • Full-time Scholarship students (Category 2)- will be engaged in all academic activities of the institute. They will have to assist faculty members in course preparation, course delivery and assessments for at least four courses and spend 15 hours/ week in assigned university-related activities.
    • All candidates admitted to the full-time PhD program under the University Scholarship Scheme will be given a monthly stipend of Rs.35,000 per month along with a full tuition fee waiver. They will be Full-Time Research Associates at IILM University.
    • These students will be awarded a scholarship amount initially for a period of 3 years. After this 3 year period is over, a review of the student’s performance will be conducted by the Research Advisory Committee. Based of the report of this committee, the scholarship to the student maybe continued or otherwise.
  • Part-time Students with Tuition Fee Waiver (Category 3) will be requested/expected to provide teaching, mentorship, and industry connect to the University.
  • Full-Time Paid and Part-Time Self-Financed Students (Category 1 and 4)- can engage in external visiting teaching assignments for not more than 8 hours a week at IILM University. The candidate can also assist faculty members on projects. The reimbursement for their engagement is fixed at Rs. 500/hour.
  • In case a student seeks to move from full-time to part-time status or vice versa, s/he must inform the Research Advisory Committee and the University and seek their written permission. In that case, the scholarship and/or tuition fee waiver status, whichever if applicable, will also be subject to review by the committee.
