PhD Programme
The Ph.D. program at IILM University offers a rigorous program with world-class national and international pedagogy, faculty, and research guides. The objectives of the Ph.D. program are to contribute to frontier areas of knowledge and provide superior research training. The academic program of the Ph.D. degree is broad-based and involves a course credit requirement and a research project leading to thesis submission.

The Ph.D. program is rigorous as it combines research and industry excellence to provide suitable exposure and opportunities to equip and prepare doctoral students for success. Our teaching and research pedagogies help our students become the best researchers, academicians, and consultants in world-class organizations. The program is run strictly as per the UGC guidelines.
A. IILM is now accepting applications for the Ph.D. program, September 2024 intake!
Applications are invited from eligible candidates for admission to the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) program as per UGC norms for the Academic Year 2024-25: September 2024 Batch. With well-established infrastructural facilities and a knowledge base, Ph.D. is offered in the following areas with high levels of specialization:

- Entrepreneurship

- Design
Applicants can apply in any of the four available admission categories:
Category 1: Full-time Self-financed/ External Funded students
Category 2: Full-time students with Scholarship
Category 3: Part-time students with Tuition Fee Waiver
Category 4: Part-time Self-financed/ External Funded students
B. Eligibility Criteria for Admission
The candidate must hold, subject to the condition laid down below:
(1) Candidates who have completed: i. A 1-year/2-semester master’s degree programme after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme or a 2-year/4-semester master’s degree programme after a 3-year bachelor’s degree programme or qualifications declared equivalent to the master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregateorits equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed
or equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institution accredited by an assessment and accreditation agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of the educational institution.
A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time.
Provided that a candidate seeking admission after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme should have a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale wherever the grading system is followed. A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time.
(2) Candidates who have completed the M.Phil. programme with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its 10 THE GAZETTE OF INDIA : EXTRAORDINARY [PART III—SEC.4] equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed or equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institution accredited by an assessment and accreditation agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of educational institutions, shall be eligible for admission to the Ph.D. programme. A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time.
Candidates who are in the final year of their Master’s/Bachelor’s Programme that would make them eligible can also apply. Such candidates, if selected, will be allowed to join the programme provisionally only if they submit a certificate latest by July 30, 2024, from the Principal/Head of the Department/Registrar or Director of the university/institute (issued on or before July 30, 2024) stating that they have appeared for the examinations (including practical examinations) in all the subjects required for obtaining the Master’s/equivalent qualification. Their admission will be confirmed only when they submit the mark sheets and a certificate of having passed the master’s/bachelor’s degree/equivalent qualification referred to in the certificate issued by the Principal/Registrar of their college/institute. The deadline for submission of the mark sheet and the certificate is November 30, 2024. Please note that those candidates who have applied based on their master’s degree will have to submit a final degree mark sheet/ certificate, and those who have applied based on their B. Tech /4-year degree will have to meet the 6.5 CGPA (or equivalent) stipulation. Non-fulfillment of these conditions will automatically result in the cancellation of the provisional admission
Note: – Haryana State Domicile reservation would be given as per the state guidelines. Preference will be given to candidates who are recipients of the Junior Research Fellowship from the UGC. Students are also encouraged to get funding for their research from industry and other agencies with the approval of the University.
C. How to Apply and Selection Procedure
Candidates are required to fill out the application form available on the website of IILM University and would be required to submit the Statement of Purpose (SOP) and Research Proposal (RP), as per the template of the University. Based on the quality of the SOP and RP, candidates would be selected for interviews with the panel of area experts. Candidates would be finalized and selected in different categories as per the feedback and recommendations of the panel.
The selection of Candidates will be done as per below weightage:
a) Score in any of the recognized PhD Admission exams conducted by a central testing agency (CUET / UGC-NET/ CSIR-UGC-NET/ IIT –JAM/ JNUEE/IISC PhD/ JRF-GATE) – 50% weightage.
b) Valid score in any of the above tests in last 12 months will be accepted.
c) SOP and Research Proposal Presentation – 30% weightage.
d) Panel Interview feedback – 20% weightage.
D. Mandatory Pre-PhD Course Work-
As per UGC Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of Ph.D. Degree Regulations, a Ph.D. student shall be required to undertake course work for a period of two semesters which is a compulsory prerequisite for both full-time and part-time candidates. A candidate will complete the Course Work through intensive classes, assignments, review of literature, and case studies). A minimum of 75% aggregate attendance is mandatory in the course work. The evaluation parameters will be similar to regular programs of the university.
After the completion of each semester of the Course Work, the examination will be conducted by the Controller of the Examination of the University. In case the candidate fails or drops in the examination, one more chance will be given for the compulsory Course Work Examination. However, if the student is not able to complete the course work in the prescribed time limit as above, due to genuine reasons, may file an appeal and on the recommendation of the Research Advisory Committee, the Dean may grant an extension up to an additional one semester. Candidates in Category 1 will be given CONDITIONAL extension without fellowship/fee waiver. Failing to complete the course work within the extended period may lead to the cancellation of candidature.
From the first semester onwards, students take advanced Ph.D. level courses which provide a thorough understanding and skills for analyzing research problems and objectives. After completing the course work, students must pass an Area Comprehensive Examination to demonstrate that they have reached a level of proficiency in high levels of specialization. Subsequently, students work on their Ph.D. dissertations. These dissertations are expected to make original contributions to the selected area of research.
For all Ph.D. students at IILM University, the total course work is for 180 hours (12 credits) which is expected to be completed within 12 months (2 semesters) / 2 years of enrolment in the program as per the University guidelines.
IILM welcomes candidates who bring in prior knowledge in their area of doctoral work and will be given due recognition in the form of credit waivers. Admitted Ph.D. students may apply for credit waiver for courses already completed at the postgraduate level during their Master’s or MPhil program subject to the approval of the Research Advisory Committee. The maximum credit waiver permissible is for 150 hours (10 credits). Candidates will have to complete a minimum of 30 hours (2 credits) at IILMU.
Students admitted are required to complete their course work in a maximum of 2 years. If they are unable to complete during this 2-year period, their case will go to the Research Advisory Committee for review. The decision of the Committee will be final in this matter.

F. Ph.D. Duration
The total duration of the Ph.D. program is a minimum of 3 years and a maximum of 6 years, including the period of coursework. Submission of the doctoral dissertation should be completed by the end of the 5-year period (which includes the coursework period). An extension of a maximum of one year will be provided with the approval of the Research Advisory Committee (RAC). If the scholar fails to submit his/her thesis during this extension period, s/he will need to re-register as a fresh candidate. No scholarship or tuition fee waiver will be given to those candidates who have re-registered.
G. Registration in the Ph.D. Program
The students will be registered formally in the Ph.D. program after they have successfully completed their coursework and their Ph.D. research proposal has been accepted by the research committee. Students will get a maximum of two attempts to present their research proposal. If their research proposal is not accepted in the first round, they can present when the next Research Advisory Committee meeting is scheduled.
H. Research Publications
The candidate is required to submit a minimum of two research papers in their doctoral research before the synopsis presentation. These research paper submissions should be to the journals which are indexed by the following organizations:
- Science Citation Index (SCI), Thomson Reuters

I. Schedule of classes
The Ph.D. program will begin in Aug/ Sep-2024.
Classes will be held on all Fridays/ Saturdays. Candidates are expected to finish assignments and other course-related deliverables in the week when no classes are scheduled.
The University will be conducting classes in offline mode. Eminent faculties and subject area experts from India and Abroad will be delivering the lectures in which IILM faculty will co-teach.
J. Fee Structure, University Activities, and Work Requirements
Category 1: Full-time Self-financed/ External Funded students
- Full-time Self-financed/ External Funded students will be Full-Time Doctoral Students at IILM University.
- The Full-time Doctoral Students will study and conduct research work as per the schedule given by the University and would be expected to devote 43 hours per week for research, teaching assistantship, and any other academic activity of the department. Academic activities are a part of Ph.D. Programme to gain insight and explore the experience of becoming an excellent researcher and teacher.
- Full-time Doctoral students will be required to pay the tuition fee as per the schedule shared by the University at the time of admission. Fees for the Ph.D. program are Rs 50,000/- per semester until the candidate graduates.
- Self – Financed Doctoral Student will be paid Rs 500 per hour in case you are teaching at IILM.
- Full-Time Doctoral Students would have to maintain regular attendance at the campus.
Category 2: Full-time students with Scholarship
- Full-time Scholarship students will be Full-time Doctoral Research Associates at IILM University and will study and conduct research work as per the schedule given by the University.
- Doctoral Research Associates are expected to devote 43 hours per week to research, teaching assistantship, and any other academic activity of the department. Academic activities are a part of a Ph.D. Program to gain insight and explore the experience of becoming an excellent researcher and teacher.
- Doctoral Research Associates will be paid a stipend of Rs. 35,000 per month as a Research/Teaching Fellowship for the three-year period of the Ph.D. Program. This will be granted initially for one year and can be renewed for a period of up to three years, subject to your academic standing and satisfactory progress towards your doctoral studies. A review of the student’s performance will be conducted by the Research Advisory Committee. Based on the report of this committee, the scholarship to the student may be continued or otherwise.
- Engagement of Doctoral Research Associates with the university will be governed by the terms/rules and regulations of, as modified or supplemented from time to time available at www.iilm.edu/engagement_terms
Category 3: Part-time students with Tuition Fee Waiver
- Part-time Students with Tuition Fee Waiver (Category 3) will be Part-Time Doctoral students at IILM University.
- Part-Time Doctoral students will conduct their research under the approved guide by the University.
- Part-Time Doctoral students would be expected/requested to provide teaching, mentorship, and industry connections to the University.
- Part-Time Doctoral students are expected to devote 15 hours per week to the academic and research activities. Academic activities are a part of a Ph.D. Program to gain insight and explore the experience of becoming an excellent researcher and teacher.
- Part-Time Doctoral students will be granted a tuition fee waiver.
Category 4: Part-time Self-financed/ External Funded students
- Part-time Self-financed/ External Funded students will be Part-time Doctoral students at the University.
- Part-time Doctoral students will conduct their research under an approved guide by the University.
- As a Part-time Doctoral Student, you will study and conduct research work as per the schedule given by the University.
- You are expected to devote 15 hours per week to the academic and research activities of the department. Academic activities are a part of a Ph.D. Program to gain insight and explore the experience of becoming an excellent researcher and teacher.
- You will be required to pay the tuition fee as per the schedule shared by the University at the time of admission. Fees for the Ph.D. program are Rs 50,000/- per semester until the candidate graduates.
Note: Full-Time and Part-Time Self-Financed Students (Category 1 and 4) can engage in external visiting teaching assignments for not more than 8 hours a week at IILM University. The candidate can also assist faculty members on projects. The reimbursement for their engagement is fixed at Rs. 500/hour. In case a student seeks to move from full-time to part-time status or vice versa, s/he must inform the Research Advisory Committee and the University and seek their written permission. In that case, the scholarship and/or tuition fee waiver status, whichever is applicable, will also be subject to review by the committee.
